What Etsy’s 2024 Holiday Trends Can Tell You About Your Pinterest Content

Every year Etsy publishes a Holiday Trends Report for their sellers to help them get ahead on their holiday product planning and grab the attention of their buyers early! And that is EXACTLY what you want to do on Pinterest. The Etsy Holiday Trend Report can give you insight into what your ideal customer is searching for on Etsy AND Pinterest, and it can help you decide what to pin on Pinterest, if you already have content that aligns with Etsy’s trends.

Where to Get the Etsy Holiday Trend Report

Etsy sends out Marketplace insights and early holiday trends in late August, if you missed your email - find the Etsy 2024 Holiday trends report here! You might think that’s REALLY early, but even on Pinterest Christmas searches start in JULY!! Pinners are planners, but so are Etsy shoppers. That means they are shopping and getting inspired now and from August through the holiday season they’ll decide to make their purchases.

How to Read the Trends Report

The report provides trends for different niches like decor, fashion, and gifting. These are big categories that tend to get a lot of traction on both Etsy and Pinterest. Within each of these niches, Etsy breaks out different topics and provides specific trending topics.

Even if your business is not one of these larger niches, pay attention to trending topics that might be related to your own products and tag the ones that do align with the products you sell.

Direct Example of Trend to Product

Here is an example of an explicit relationship from trend to product >>

In the Etsy holiday trend report for 2024, bow earrings is a trending product that has increased in searches and popularity by 135%.

For example, if you have a polymer clay earring shop that sells bow earrings - you should take note of this trend (even though the image suggests the bow earring is gold jewelry, polymer clay or other handmade jewelry can still take advantage of this trend).

Indirect Example of Trend to Product

Here is an indirect Example of how a trend is more broad and can fit multiple niches >>

In the Etsy 2024 Holiday Trend Report, College Gifts increased in searches and popularity by 63% and Friend Gifts increased by 10%.

If you sell a product on Etsy that can be given as a gift for someone who is in college or to someone who is a friend, you should take note of these trending keywords. These keywords are more broad and describe more about THE PERSON versus the specific gift. This opens up so many possibilities for all niches to leverage these types of gifting trends.

Keeping with the example of having a polymer clay earring shop, the handmade clay earrings could be an excellent gift for a friend! Or, if you sell your own unique prints, a custom print could make the perfect gift for someone in college to decorate their dorm room.

Why Do Etsy Trends Work on Pinterest?

Etsy trends also work on Pinterest because Pinterest and Etsy are both search engines, full of people looking for the perfect gift or to be inspired! Since it is a similar audience and user base, it’s my opinion that looking at Etsy holiday trends can help you decide where to put your efforts on Pinterest this holiday season.

If you sell bow earrings → Create Pins about bow earrings!

If you sell earrings → Create Pins speaking to gifts for friends!

If you sell custom art prints → Create Pins speaking to a college gift!

How to Create Pins That Align to Etsy Trends

Etsy trends gives you the keyword to focus on - PHEW! They did the hard part for us 😀

When you’re creating Pins on Pinterest, it’s important to leverage these keywords in your Pins!

For example, if you have a polymer clay earring shop and you sell clay bow earrings…here is how I would structure a Pin that will leverage the “bow earrings” Etsy trend.

  1. Create an Image or a Video and overlay the keywords “Bow Earrings”
NOTE, being more specific will target a smaller audience, giving you a better chance of showing up in Search!

  2. Highlight the product on the Pin image or video
It’s important to showcase your product in the Pin itself. This lets the Pinner decide quickly as they are scrolling through other Pins - without wasting their time having them click to see what’s on the other side!

  3. Use a SHOPPING call to action!
Let the Pinner know that this is shoppable and draw attention to it by adding animation! (Did you know that 75% of Pinners are alway shopping 😱) This also helps with the decision making and weeding out Pinners that are not right for you, like the Pinners looking to DIY their own earrings.

  4. Use the “Bow Earrings” keyword in the Title, Description, and Tags (if available)
In addition to using “Bow Earrings” as an overlay on the Pin itself,  you also want to use the keyword within the Pin metadata (aka - the Pin Title and Description! Pinterest uses this information in their search algorithm, and you will have a better chance at ranking for this keyword if you make use of the Pin Title and Description!

  5. Link to your product!!
To me, this is what makes Pinterest so special. You can give the Pinner an easy link right to your product page or a blog post that goes into more detail about your product, and help guide the buying decision making.

  6. Save to a relevant board
Pins are saved to boards - which is a high-level category where you can store multiple pins. For example, if you have a Polymer Clay earring shop, and you sell bow earrings as well as other type of earrings for the holidays, you will have a board called “Handmade Clay Christmas Earrings”

And then you will store this pin that is more specific - about clay bow earrings - into the board that is the higher-level category, “Handmade Clay Christmas Earrings”.

This helps Pinterest know when to show your Pin! Someone can be searching “Christmas clay earrings” or they could be looking specifically for “bow earrings” and your Pin should show up!

Aligning your Pin to an Etsy Holiday trend means you are creating Pins that use the relevant keywords for your business, and linking to your products so that users on Pinterest can easily get to your shop.

When Should You Start Pinning Holiday Content on Pinterest?

Holiday searches start in July on Pinterest!! I know, I can’t believe it myself! Take a look at this trend curve for the search keyword “Christmas gift ideas”

You can see how there are searches starting in July and the curve rises until December, where it drops way off in January after Christmas, where Pinners stop looking for Christmas Gift Ideas.

So as soon as possible from July-September. This gives Pinterest enough time to learn about your Pins and how they should rank them, AND your Pins will be on Pinterest and ready for the holiday searching for the perfect gift!

Find Other Pinterest Trends for the 2024 Holiday Season

Trends on Pinterest are different than a social media trend. These are long-term seasonal trends that you can see patterns year over year. Head over to trends.Pinterest.com and look up trending searches happening on Pinterest and back-date the trends tool to see how the search term performed last year.

Personally, I love starting with the Etsy 2024 Holiday Trend Report, to get the insights from a shopping platform that has a similar audience to the one on Pinterest! Use this knowledge to create Pins on Pinterest for the holidays to get more eyes on your products and increase your sales and brand awareness.
